Creativity thrives in Ishigaki and the other Yaeyama islands. Art markets, exhibitions and other creative initiatives take place throughout the year.
TRADITIONAL YAEYAMA CRAFT
Each area in Japan has its own potteries and style of which many follow long traditions. The shiisa lion dog, the protector of homes, is a typical craft made in Okinawa and the Yaeyama islands. For most of the Yaeyama potters, inspiration comes from the tropical surroundings of the Yaeyama islands.
