Shiraho Café in Shiraho village
Shiraho village in Ishigaki island with its charming small streets and traditional Yaeyama/Okinawa houses offers a sense of warmth and coziness with a few restaurants, a Sunday market, teahouse and bakery. A calm environment, not far from the city area. We wrote about Shunka Banchan, this breakfast and lunch restaurant is nearby.
SHIRAHO CAFÉ
A short while ago Shiraho Café opened. In contrary to the older houses around, this café is inside a new building and might appeal to design and architecture lovers.
ARCHITECTURE
Inside the house the architect from mainland Japan designed a narrow hall, with sliding doors on both sides. This immediately surrounds you with that typical Japanese atmosphere. With a twist though. The doors are made of twigs which reveal a tiny little peek to the other side of the hallway. Other doors are wood, which look like walls rather than doors that can slide open.
It seems the architect worked according traditional Japanese architecture ideas using sliding doors, surprising glimpses, a certain light and added local Yaeyama materials. Furthermore for the base of the house concrete blocks are placed, which are widely used in Japan for housing and architecture. This combination makes a modern, ageless and serene impression.
TEAHOUSE
Shiraho café is a tea/coffeehouse with a small menu serving homemade herb tea, coffee, local fruit cocktails and cake. We ordered ‘Okara’. This is cake prepared with soy pulp, the leftover of the soybean.
CRAFT & DESIGN
Shiraho Café sells their homemade local herb tea and won a design prize with their tea boxes. Colourful handmade products, such as coasters, bags, purses and these pillows, can be found in the small shop near the entrance.

Shiraho café in het dorpje Shiraho in Ishigaki
In het dorpje Shiraho op Ishigaki eiland, vind je smalle straatjes huizen in traditionele Yaeyama/Okinawa bouwstijl. Leuk om eens doorheen te lopen. Een gezellige sfeer heerst er met zo hier en daar een restaurant, marktje, guesthouse, theehuis of bakkerij. We schreven ook al over Shunka Banchan, dit lunchrestaurant ligt even verderop.
Shiraho Café is er nog niet zo lang. Het gebouw is in tegenstelling tot de oudere huizen rondom, nieuw met een bijzondere architectuur.
ARCHITECTUUR
Interessant is hoe de architect de binnenkant van het huis heeft ontworpen met een smalle hal en aan weerszijden schuifdeuren die ofwel gemaakt zijn van takken en licht doorzichtig zijn of volledig van hout waardoor het net een muur is.
De architect lijkt de traditionele Japanse inrichting van schuifdeuren, doorkijkjes, bepaalde lichtinval en lokale materialen als uitgangspunt genomen te hebben. Daarnaast zie je in Japan dat er veel gewerkt wordt met betonblokken. Met deze combinatie is een moderne, tijdloze en serene sfeer gecreëerd.
THEEHUIS
Shiraho café is een thee/koffiehuis met een kleine kaart waarop huisgemaakte kruidenthee wordt aangeboden, koffie, cocktails van lokale vruchten en een stukje taart. Wij hadden een stukje ‘okara’ met vruchtensiroop. Okara is gemaakt van soyabonen pulp, het omhulsel van de sojaboon.
CRAFT & DESIGN
Shiraho Café maakt kruidenthee van lokale kruiden en hebben een designprijs gewonnen met hun theedoosjes. Deze worden op veel plekken verkocht. Naast deze souvenirs, kun je in het winkeltje ook allerlei kleurige handgemaakte producten kopen met hun eigen design. Zoals onderzetters, tassen, portemonnees en deze kussens.
