[:en]Taketomi island is the most picturesque of all Yaeyama islands. The government puts a lot of effort in keeping the islands historical atmosphere and culture. This is why the village still has that traditional Yaeyama feeling with red roofed houses and sand paths. Local people also value their cultural heritage.

TAKETOMI BY BICYCLE
Taketomi is small, so exploring the island by foot is fine. Renting a bike though is a much more popular way to go round. It’s easy to rent a bike at one of the local bike rentals for about ¥300 for an hour until ¥1500 for a whole day. The bike rental company has a free pick up and return service to/from the ferry terminal. Cycle around and visit the popular Kondoi beach with its pristine water and white sand. Potter around the village to find a local souvenir to bring home. You will feel thirsty, so make sure to drink a homemade juice in one of the small cafes.

The center of the island is about 10 minutes from the ferry terminal. Around here you can find souvenir shops and restaurants.

WHAT TO DO IN TAKETOMI
The main tour here is a waterbuffalo cariage ride going round the center (10 minute ride). It`s touristy. During the ride, a sanshin player sings and plays a traditional Yaeyama song. If you book this tour, the company offers a pick up and return service to the ferry terminal.

From Ishigaki to Taketomi it’s a 10 -15 minutes ferry service.

[:nl]Taketomi eiland is het meest pittoreske van alle eilanden in de Yaeyama archipel. De overheid zorgt ervoor dat de huizen alleen volgens de traditionele manier gebouwd worden waardoor het centrum nog het oude Yaeyama leven uitademt. De lokale bevolking hecht veel waarde aan hun culturele erfgoed.

Het eiland is klein en perfect voor een dagtrip. Maar je kunt uiteraard ook wat langer verblijven in een van de hotels of kleinere zelfstandige verblijfsaccommodaties.
Shisa
Hier geen wildernis en bergachtig gebied zoals in Iriomote. Maar smalle zandpaden, mooie traditionele huizen en rode daken met shisa; de typische leeuwhonden die het huis en de bewoners bewaken tegen boze geesten.

TAKETOMI OP DE FIETS
Het eiland is maar klein, dus te voet is het eiland goed te bezoeken. Het huren van een fiets is daarentegen een populaire manier om het te verkennen. Een fiets huur je bij een van de lokale fietsverhuurders voor ongeveer ¥300 voor een uur tot ¥1500 voor de hele dag. De fietsverhuurder haalt en brengt je van/naar de ferry terminal.
Taketomi eiland is leuk als je een halve dag cultuur wilt opsnuiven en de andere helft van de dag wilt genieten op het strand. Bekijk hier de mooiste stranden.

WAT TE DOEN
Je kunt een rondritje maken in een wagen voortgetrokken door een waterbuffel. Een sanshi speler begeleidt het met een traditioneel Yaeyama liedje en muziek. Indien je deze korte tour boekt, word je van de ferry terminal afgehaald met een busje en ook weer teruggebracht. Dit is bij de prijs inbegrepen.
